Will you be attending ASTRO 2024 in Washington, DC? Join us at Inova Schar Cancer on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 5 – 8 p.m. for a tour of our multimodality facility, integrating several photon technologies, brachytherapy and a state-of-the-art proton delivery system.

Our tour will take you through the integration of proton therapy in a leading-edge radiation oncology department. We will showcase our intake and imaging processes, photon and clinical management facilities, and proton treatment rooms, and we’ll take a look behind the scenes in the proton gantry. Our tour will also include two brief talks discussing clinical rationale, physics and dosimetry. After the tour, you are invited to join fellow attendees and industry experts for refreshments at the reception.

Preregistration is required, and attendance is free. Shuttle service will be provided to pick up and drop off registered attendees to and from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (ASTRO 2024’s location). The event will begin at 5 p.m., with shuttles departing from the convention center at 4:15 p.m.

Ashish Chawla, MD
Department Chair, Radiation Oncology | Inova Schar Cancer

Ashish Chawla, MD, Department Chair of Radiation Oncology at Inova Schar Cancer, specializes in breast and gastrointestinal cancer management.  He has academic appointments at the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse. He received his MD at Thomas Jefferson University and his Radiation Oncology residency training at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital.  He currently serves on the Board of the National Association for Proton therapy (NAPT). 

Proton Therapy at Inova Schar: The Why and the How

Gopal Bajaj, MD, MBA, FASTRO
President, Radiation Oncology Associates, Emeritus Department Chair, Radiation Oncology | Inova Schar Cancer

Gopal Bajaj, MD, MBA, FASTRO, President of Radiation Oncology Associates and Emeritus Department Chair, Radiation Oncology at Inova Schar Cancer, specializes in head and neck malignancies and radiation therapy for benign diseases.  He has held academic roles at Johns Hopkins Hospital and currently holds appointments at University of Virginia, University of Maryland, and VCU.  Dr. Bajaj's education includes degrees in Biology and Genetics, a medical degree from the University of Kansas, and Radiation Oncology residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He is Chair of the Government Relations Council on the Board of Directors of ASTRO.

Talk 1: Harnessing Proton Therapy: Cutting-Edge Care in Community Oncology

Avani Rao, MD
Research Director, Radiation Oncology | Inova Schar Cancer

Avani Rao, MD, Research Director of Radiation Oncology at Inova Schar Cancer, is a board-certified radiation oncologist with a focus on pediatric, gynecological, breast, and gastrointestinal cancers.  She joined Inova and Radiation Oncology Associates in 2020. A Kentucky native, Dr. Rao is a Yale University alumna and completed her medical training at Johns Hopkins University, where she also served as Chief Resident. She has specialized fellowship training in advanced radiation therapies and proton therapy from the University of Maryland. Recognized for her clinical and research excellence, Dr. Rao has over 20 first-author publications and has led clinical trials for pancreatic cancer treatments.

Daniel Kim, MD, MBA
Director of Genitourinary Radiation Oncology | Inova Schar Cancer

Daniel Kim, MD, Director of Genitourinary Radiation Oncology at Inova Schar Cancer,  is an esteemed Harvard-educated physician, recognized for his clinical excellence and leadership in radiation oncology. A former All-American tennis champion and recipient of the prestigious Michael E. Porter Leadership Award, he has contributed significantly to healthcare policy in Massachusetts. Trained in all forms of advanced radiation therapies, Dr. Kim specializes in treating genitourinary, CNS, and gastrointestinal cancers, leading multidisciplinary treatment approaches since he joined Inova and Radiation Oncology Associates in 2021. 

Talk 2: Our Experience in Utilizing RayStation in a Multi-Modality Radiation Oncology Department

Peng Wang, Ph.D., DABR
Chief Proton Physicist | Inova Schar Cancer

Peng Wang, Ph.D., DABR, Chief Proton Physicist at Inova Schar Cancer. He has academic appointments at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Dr. Wang is a UNC-Chapel Hill and University of Chicago alumnus and completed his residency training at University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as Chief Resident. Recognized for his clinical and research excellence, Dr. Wang has over 10 corresponding-author publications and has served as principle investigator of NIBIB-funded research. He currently serves in the Education Committee of the National Association for Proton Therapy (NAPT).

Ashkan Parniani, CMD, MBA
System Chief of Medical Dosimetry | Inova Schar Cancer

Ashkan Parniani, CMD, MBA, System Chief of Medical Dosimetry at Inova Schar Cancer, where he leads a team of highly motivated medical dosimetrist in generating high-quality treatment plans across multiple modalities. He holds academic appointments with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and serves as the clinical preceptor for the Medical Dosimetry Program.  Ashkan Parniani has earned his BS in Clinical Radiation Sciences from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed an MBA at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
